Letter Space

2016 · Design & development

A physics-flavoured word game — fly a pen through space catching letters to spell out Newton’s quotes on motion.

An educational game that tries not to feel like one. The quotes are real Newton, the vocabulary floating in the background is real physics, but the loop is pure arcade: steer, catch the right letter, avoid the wrong one.

The trick with teaching games is that the lesson usually kills the game. Here the learning is a side effect of aiming — you read the words because you are hunting for the next letter, not because a screen told you to.

Programming, level design, artwork and the original soundtrack are all mine. The single exception is the flying pen, which came from elsewhere.

The project went through a couple of names on the way, which is why the repo still has folders called Newton and Rocket Science holding the same game.
